Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve: Which One Is Right for You?

When considering Weight Loss Surgery, one of the most common questions a patient faces is: Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve: Which One Is Right for Me? At My New Body Obesity Centerwe have performed over 5000 of both procedures.

You should understand the similarities and differences between both types of bariatric procedures. When reviewing gastric bypass vs sleeve, there are a number of factors to consider:

How are a Sleeve and Bypass Similar?

  • Both procedures are minimally invasive( laparoscopic )with only five 1 inch (at most) incisions.
  • Both procedures reduce the amount of food you can eat before feeling full.
  • Follow up Protocol, Hospital Stay and Recovery  are similar in both procedures.

What is the Difference Between a Gastric Sleeve and a Gastric Bypass?

      • The Gastric Sleeve procedureusually lasts 35 minutes, while a Gastric Bypass takes about 90 minutes.
      • The Gastric Sleeve does not involve the intestine, while a Bypass includes gastrointestinal anastomosis. My New Body Obesity Surgeons also perform a Mini Bypass Gástrico which only has one anastomosis.
      • The Gastric Sleeve is a revisable surgery and can be converted or adjusted. The only way to revise a Gastric Bypass that has shown long term success is a Lap Band.
