Bariatric Surgery Risk/Benefit Calculator

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the program to achieve one national accreditation standard for bariatric surgery centers, a combination from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgert (ASMBS). Both Institutions of which I am an active member, launched a couple of years a surgical risk/benefit calculator that will provide people considering Weight Loss Surgery with accurate patient-specific information to guide surgical decision making and informed consent. You can  Click here for direct access to the calculator.

The Bariatric Surgical Risk/Benefit Calculator was developed using data gathered from more than 775000 surgeries from 925 participating centers from January 1, 2013, through June 30, 2018. For 30-day outcomes, the calculator uses 20 patient predictors, such as age, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status classification, and preoperative body mass index (BMI) are used to predict the probability that a patient will experience one of nine different outcomes within the first 30 days after surgery. Examples of these outcomes are infection, reintervention, and fatalities.

The calculator can predict the patient’s BMI, weight, and total weight change percentage trajectories up to one year after an operative procedure. To assist with patients’ understanding of the predictions, the calculator provides a summary report designed for patients to share the information with their families and other multidisciplinary team members involved in their care.

This calculator is very useful and extremely powerful. It uses millions of cases from the MBSAQIP patient data base to evaluate three of the most important outcomes scenarios:

  • First it predicts rates and likelihood of unwanted complications.
  • Second, it predicts weight loss and the progression
  • Predicts rates of disease resolution, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sleep apnea, and others.

The MBSAQIP Calculator is a unique tool that aids patients and gives them an important overview and the expected outcome of the surgery.  It also helps patient by getting them involved in the risk assessment and procedure selection for their specific case. It also offers a detailed projection of the expected weight loss after surgery with weight loss and comorbidity improvement milestones for the outmost important first post-operative year.
